
New driveways, and full tear out and replacement of the one that failed. Proper base, proper thickness, joints cut where they belong, so this one does not go the way the last one did.
A driveway is the largest slab of concrete most people ever buy, it is the first thing anybody sees of the house, and it is the one surface on the property with a vehicle sitting on it every day. It also stays outside twenty-four hours a day for decades and gets plowed, scraped and driven on the entire time. Nothing in that combination is forgiving, which is why the difference between a driveway that lasts and one that does not is decided before a single truck shows up.
Minnesota Valley Concrete pours driveways across the southwest Twin Cities metro, out of Carver. Fifteen-plus years of doing it here means we have torn out a lot of other people's work, and the failures repeat. Thin slabs. Base that was never compacted, or never there at all. Joints cut too late, too shallow, or laid out in a pattern that made a crack across the middle inevitable. Concrete poured tight against a garage slab with nothing between them.
So when we quote a driveway we quote the whole assembly, not just the square footage. What comes out, what goes back in under it, how thick the slab is, where the steel goes, where the joints land, how water leaves the surface, and what happens at the apron and the garage. That is the part that decides whether you are calling somebody about this again far sooner than you should be.
Cracking is the first one, and it is the most misunderstood. Concrete shrinks as it cures. It is going to crack somewhere. Control joints are how we decide where. Cut them on time, cut them to about a quarter of the slab depth rather than just scratching the surface, and lay them out in panels close to square and inside about ten to twelve feet on a four inch slab, and the cracks form down in the joints where nobody sees them. Skip that and the slab picks its own line, usually diagonally across the widest panel.
Uneven support is the second, and it is the one that ends a driveway rather than just marking it. Frost does not lift a slab by simply swelling the water already in the ground. In frost susceptible soil, silts and clayey silts especially, the advancing frost line draws more water up to itself and freezes it in flat layers, so the ground grows by far more than the water in it ever could on its own. It never grows evenly across a lot. Panels tip, joints open, the surface stops shedding water, and the problem feeds itself. The fix is not a thicker slab, it is a base that drains: a compacted aggregate base of consistent depth over a subgrade that was actually prepared, so no single spot stays wet enough to feed a lens.
Surface scaling is the third, and it is the one homeowners have the most control over. Road salt comes off tires onto the apron and the first few feet of the drive, chlorides work into the top layer, and the surface flakes off in sheets. An air entrained mix, which is concrete with microscopic air bubbles built into it on purpose, resists that far better than a mix without air, and it is one of the things we spell out on the quote. Staying off the de-icer entirely for the first season matters more than anything else you can do.
On a replacement, the old slab comes out and leaves the property. We break, load and haul, and we look at what is underneath while it is open, because the reason the last one failed is usually sitting right there in the base.
Organics and soft material come out. Aggregate base goes in and gets compacted in lifts to a consistent depth across the whole footprint, including at the edges, which is where lazy base work shows up first.
Residential driveways get a nominal four inches. We go thicker where it earns it: the apron, the approach where trucks turn in, RV and trailer parking, and anywhere a delivery truck is going to run a wheel.
Fiber in the mix, and rebar on a grid or welded wire mesh supported on chairs where the slab calls for it. The point is not to prevent cracks, it is to keep the slab acting as one piece and hold any crack tight.
The finished surface is graded so water runs off it and away from the garage and the foundation, and so meltwater does not pond in a low spot. That gets planned at the form stage, not fixed afterward.
The apron meets the street correctly, and the driveway is isolated from the garage slab and any adjoining structure so the two can move independently instead of fighting each other. Edges get finished, not just struck off.
We measure, look at the grade and the drainage, check access for trucks, and talk about what the driveway has to carry. You get the scope in writing: dimensions, thickness, base, reinforcement, finish and jointing.
Old concrete comes out and gets hauled off. We cut to depth for the new base, and deal with anything soft we find rather than paving over it.
Aggregate base goes in and gets compacted. Forms are set to the finished grade so the pitch and the edges are right before any concrete is ordered.
Placement, screed, float, and the finish you picked, usually a broom finish for traction. Edges and control joint tooling get done while the slab is workable.

We pour March to mid-October. Driveways, though, are typically sold December through March for the following season. That is how this business actually runs, and it is worth understanding as a buyer rather than treating it as a sales line. A driveway is a full day of tear out, a day of prep and a pour day, and those days get committed early. By the time the ground is workable the calendar is largely spoken for.
Spring adds a second constraint that has nothing to do with us. As frost comes out of the ground, seasonal load restrictions go on posted roads, and a fully loaded ready mix truck is exactly the kind of load those restrictions exist to keep off a soft road. That means the first pours of the year start when the routes to your house allow it, not on a date somebody promised in February. We are upfront about that when we schedule, because a contractor who promises an early April driveway in this state is either guessing or not telling you the whole picture.
The upside of buying early is real. You have time to look at finishes, get the layout right, decide whether you want a widened approach or an extra parking pad while the forms are already going in, and get on the schedule at the front of the season instead of the back of it.
Most driveways go down with a broom finish, because it gives traction when the surface is wet and it wears well. From there, a stamped or exposed aggregate border along the edges or at the apron dresses up the front of the house without stamping the whole drive. Full stamped driveways are something we pour, and they are a real option if the look matters that much to you.
While the crew and the trucks are on site, the rest of the flatwork usually makes sense to do at the same time: sidewalks, the front walk and steps, a garage apron, a pole barn or shop apron, a parking pad, or a floating slab for a shed. Doing it in one mobilization takes one trip instead of two, and it means the whole property matches.
A nominal four inches is standard for a residential driveway carrying cars and light trucks. We thicken it where the loading justifies it, such as the apron, the turning approach, and any area where an RV, a trailer or a delivery truck parks. Thickness alone is not the answer though. A thick slab on a bad base still fails.
Yes, and that is a large share of our driveway work. We break out and haul away the old slab, inspect and correct the base underneath, and pour the new driveway. Seeing what is under the old concrete is genuinely useful, because it usually explains why the last one failed.
Our pour season is March to mid-October. Early spring depends on frost coming out of the ground and on seasonal road restrictions clearing on the routes to your address, so the first weeks of the season are not something anyone can promise a hard date on. We schedule driveways over the winter for the season ahead.
Stay off it on foot until we tell you it is ready, and keep vehicles off longer than that. We give you the exact timing for your pour, since temperature and the mix both affect how fast the slab gains strength. Driving on it too early is one of the few ways to damage a good driveway in its first month.
Mostly by leaving it alone. Keep de-icing chemicals off it, especially the first season, since chlorides drive into the surface and flake the top layer off. Sand gives you traction instead. Beyond that, keep the joints clear of packed dirt so they can do their job, and put a pad under a trailer jack rather than setting it on the slab.
Concrete costs more up front and lasts considerably longer with less maintenance, and it does not soften and rut in July heat. Asphalt is cheaper to install and needs sealcoating on a cycle. In a climate that swings this far both directions we pour concrete, so weigh our answer against the fact that concrete is what we do for a living.
