Custom Concrete Countertops in the Southwest Twin Cities

Counters, bar tops and vanities, poured one at a time by the same hands that pour driveways and patios the rest of the week. This is a side of the business Randle takes on when the flatwork schedule allows, so the timing conversation comes first.

A concrete countertop is poured, not cut, and that is the entire reason to want one. It takes the shape of whatever form it is built in, so it can follow a curve, wrap a corner, or carry a sink cast into the slab with no rim and no seam. Nothing about it comes off a rack in a set size, and nothing about it is chosen from an inventory of what happens to be in stock.

Minnesota Valley Concrete is a flatwork contractor. Driveways, stamped patios, walks, foundation walls and pumping are what the crew does from March to mid-October, and it is fifteen-plus years of working with the same material every day of the season. Counters are not a second business and there is no shop full of them. In Randle's own words, he does some here and there, when he is not super busy.

We are putting that at the top of the page rather than burying it, because it is the single fact that decides whether this is a good fit for your project. If you need a top on a fixed date because a kitchen remodel has a hard finish deadline and three other trades stacked behind it, a dedicated fabricator with production capacity is a better call and we will say so on the phone. The upside is real and it is not a consolation prize. A top built this way gets somebody's full attention rather than a slot on a line. It is formed for your cabinets, poured, cured, ground and finished as its own piece of work. The trade is timing, and it is the first thing we talk about rather than the last.

What a poured top does that a fabricated slab cannot

Shape is the first thing. Concrete goes wherever the form goes, so the geometry stops being a constraint and starts being a decision. A curved edge, a top that follows a wall that is not square, a sink cast as part of the slab itself. Those are form questions rather than availability questions, so what they cost is time at the form stage rather than being off the table. The more elaborate the form, the more of that time it takes, which is the same conversation as the schedule and not a separate one.

Character is the second, and it is the thing people either love or should avoid. A concrete top carries small variations in tone across the surface, and it takes on a patina where a household actually uses it. It can be ground back far enough to open up the aggregate and read as terrazzo, or kept tight and closed so it reads almost like honed stone. Two tops poured from the same mix in the same form do not come out identical. If what you want is a surface that is perfectly uniform edge to edge and looks the same in year ten as it did on day one, quartz does that better and we will tell you so rather than sell you something you will be unhappy with.

Weight is the third. Cast concrete is a real slab and it is heavy, so what is under it has to be right. Cabinets need to be level and properly supported, an overhang past a certain reach needs steel or a bracket underneath it, and a long run may be poured in more than one piece with the seam placed somewhere deliberate. None of that is difficult, but all of it is much easier when it is planned with the cabinet installer before the boxes are set rather than discovered on the day the top arrives.

The last one is simple availability of the look. There is no supplier catalog to shop from here, no slab yard to walk, and no sample chip that will tell you exactly what your top is going to look like, because it does not exist until it is poured. What you get instead is the ability to decide the thickness, the edge, the color and the finish independently of one another, which is not a choice a fabricated material offers.

Decisions that get made before anything is poured

  • Whether the schedule has a window for it at all, which is the first question and not the last
  • Thickness, which changes the whole feel of a kitchen
  • Edge profile, from a square eased edge to a chamfer or a hand worn look
  • Overhang and seating depth, and what has to support it underneath
  • Sink style: an integral sink cast into the slab, or a cutout for an undermount
  • How far the surface gets ground back, which decides how much aggregate shows
  • Integral color through the slab, and whether the finish is closed and tight or open and textured

What we pour

Kitchen counters, islands and vanities

Cabinet runs, island tops and bathroom vanities, with cutouts for a sink or a cooktop, or a sink cast into the slab where that is what you are after. Straightforward shapes come out best.

Bar tops and lower level surfaces

Basement bars and finished lower level spaces, where a heavier top with more texture and more visible aggregate tends to suit the room better than a tight polished surface.

Outdoor tops tied to a patio we are pouring

A grill surround, a bar top or a sitting wall cap in a yard we are already stamping. Being on site anyway is what makes the timing work, so these are the ones most likely to get a yes.

Talk about timing first

Before design, before samples, before anything: we look at where the flatwork calendar sits and whether there is a real window for your job. If there is, we plan around it. If there is not one that fits your remodel, you hear that in the first conversation instead of the fourth. No lead time gets quoted on this page because there is not an honest one to quote.

Measure off the installed cabinets

We measure the boxes that are installed rather than the drawing, because cabinets rarely land exactly where the plan says. Thickness, overhangs, edge profile, sink and cooktop cutouts, color and finish are all settled at this stage and written down.

Build the forms

The mold is the job. Every surface you will see is a negative of the form, so it gets built square, sealed at every joint and detailed for the cutouts and any cast sink. Reinforcement gets laid out at the same time.

Pour, cure and grind

The slab is poured and consolidated so the face comes out dense rather than porous, then left to cure. After curing it gets ground and honed to the finish you chose, voids are filled and the surface is reground until it is right.

Seal and set

The top gets sealed, then brought over and set on your cabinets. We go through the care instructions in person, because how a concrete top is treated in its first year has a great deal to do with how it looks in its fifth.

Color, aggregate and the finish you actually end up with

Color goes through the slab rather than onto it. Integral pigment is mixed into the concrete, so the color is the material and not a coating that can wear through at the edge of the sink. That is a durability advantage and a design constraint at the same time: the color is decided before the pour and it is not adjustable afterward, which is why the color gets settled on a sample looked at in your kitchen rather than under a work light.

The aggregate decides as much as the pigment does. Ground back a little, a top reads as a smooth solid color with a faint sand texture. Ground back further, the stone in the mix opens up and the surface becomes speckled or, taken far enough, close to terrazzo. Glass, larger decorative stone or a seeded aggregate can be worked into the face on purpose. Where the grind stops is a decision, and it is one we make together on a sample rather than in the middle of finishing your actual top.

Finish is the third layer. A closed, tightly ground surface is easier to keep clean and reads more formal. A more open surface with visible aggregate and some texture hides daily life better and suits a bar or an outdoor kitchen. Small pinholes and voids are part of cast concrete: some get filled and reground, and some get left because the alternative is a surface with no depth to it. How far to go with that is a conversation, and it is worth having before the pour rather than after.

Whatever the combination, expect the finished top to be recognizably concrete. That is the point of choosing it. Anyone hoping the material will imitate marble exactly will be happier with marble, and we would rather point that out at the sample stage than at the end.

Living with a concrete countertop

Concrete is porous, so the top lives or dies by its sealer. A good sealer resists water and most household spills and it is still not a force field. Wine, citrus, oil and anything acidic want to be wiped up rather than left overnight. A cutting board and a trivet are not optional accessories on a concrete counter, they are how the sealer stays intact, and the sealer is what keeps the surface looking the way it looked when it was set.

Fine hairline crazing and the occasional hairline crack are normal in cast concrete and are not a defect. They come from the material shrinking as it cures and from the ordinary movement of the cabinets and the house underneath. Most people come to read them as part of the character of the surface. Anyone who wants a flawless, unchanging slab should know that going in, and we would rather you hear it from us now than discover it yourself later.

Day to day care is simple. Mild soap and water, no abrasive pads, no bleach, and reseal on a schedule we go over with you based on the sealer used and how hard the surface gets worked. A kitchen with three kids in it and a basement bar used twice a month are not on the same cycle. Outdoor tops get a different sealer than indoor tops and want a fresh coat more often, since they are out in the sun and the weather all year.

Where these fit, and where we take them

The projects that go best are the ones where the countertop is part of something larger. An outdoor top on a stamped patio we are already pouring, a bar top in a lower level that opens onto a walkout. Being on site anyway makes the coordination easy and the finishes tie together on purpose rather than by coincidence, and it is usually the timing that works out best too.

How long is the wait for a concrete countertop?

There is no standing answer to that, and any page that gives you one is guessing. These get fitted around pour work rather than run on a production line, so the wait is whatever the flatwork calendar says the week you call. Call and ask and you will get a real answer for that month instead of a number invented for a website.

What does a concrete countertop cost?

It is quoted per job, because square footage is only part of it. Thickness, the edge profile, cutouts, a cast sink, how far the surface is ground back and how many separate pieces a run needs all move the number. We price it after we have seen the space and settled the details.

Will a concrete countertop crack?

Fine hairline crazing is normal in cast concrete and so is the occasional hairline crack. It comes from curing shrinkage and from ordinary movement in the cabinets and the house. Reinforcement in the slab keeps any crack tight. If a perfectly uniform surface is the goal, engineered stone is the better material and we will say so.

Can I cut on it or set a hot pan on it?

Use a cutting board and a trivet. The concrete itself handles heat well, but the sealer on top of it is what protects the surface from stains, and heat and knives are what damage a sealer. Treated like a sealed natural stone top, a concrete counter holds up for a very long time.

Do you set them, or just pour them?

The same people who pour it bring it over and set it. What we do not do is set a top on cabinets that are not level or not supported for the weight, and we do not do the cabinet work, the plumbing or the tile behind it. That gets checked at the template visit so nobody is surprised on the day.

Can you cast a sink into the top?

It is one of the better reasons to choose concrete, and it is a form decision, so it has to be settled before the pour rather than added afterward. An integral sink is cast as part of the slab, so there is no rim and no seam to keep clean. Ask early, because it adds form work and that is exactly the kind of thing the schedule conversation has to account for.

Do you do outdoor tops?

They are the most natural fit of any of it, especially when we are already pouring a stamped patio in the same yard. An exterior top gets a mix and a sealer meant to sit outside, which is a different specification than an indoor kitchen top, and it wants resealing more often.

Are you a countertop shop?

No, and it matters that you know that. There is no showroom, no slab yard, no sample library and no supplier line behind this. We are a concrete contractor whose main work is flatwork and foundations, and counters are taken on around that. You get a top poured by somebody who works with this material every day of the season, and in exchange the timing is set by the pour calendar rather than by a production queue.
